What Is a Gong?
A gong is a percussion instrument formed from a circular metal disc. Gongs are played with mallets, a type of percussion beater with a large, felted head. Gongs are a key instrument in the traditional music of China, Burma, and Indonesia, and they have been a part of Western musical culture since at least the 1700s.
Suspended gongs: These flat gongs are circular discs with holes near the top of their outer circumference. The percussionist strikes the gong with a mallet, producing an indefinite pitch. Suspended gongs are the type of gong most commonly used as an orchestral instrument.
Nipple gongs: Also known as bossed gongs. They can also be found in Buddhist temples throughout the world, as gong-making remains a sacred part of some Buddhist cultures.
Bowl gongs: These musical instruments are also known as singing bowls. As their name suggests, these tuned gongs are shaped like small bowls.
Planetary Gongs (suspended gongs)
All of these gongs resonate in harmony with the celestial bodies and communicate a distinct aspect of the Music of the Spheres, which was first documented by Pythagoras in the 6th Century BC.
Each planet gong contributes a vital pitch to the total harmonic resonance of our solar system. Named for the Greek Gods, the planets also embody significant archetypal, astrological, and mythological associations.
The Planet Gongs provide a gateway back to our natural state of connectedness with the physical, emotional, and spiritual world.
When the gong is sounded, we are physically connected to the strength and power of its resonance, sympathy, and correspondences.
Solar System Gongs resonate chakras and organs, and benefit Psychological, Physiological and Spiritual conditions.
Playing Technique and Tools
When playing the gong at the lower part, the sound is deeper than when playing it at the upper part, close to the suspension.
